CHAPTER 14

SPIDER WOMAN

Shit.

That was what Katie felt like. Absolute shit.

Her memories were spotty at best. There was a struggle, she recalled. She couldn’t see anything, but something tried to attack her so she retaliated. Then, a couple of quick firearm reports and darkness.

Then light.

She lifted herself to her feet slowly and worked her jaw. So far, so good. Katie lifted her hands to her face to wipe away the goop that she’d expected to find, but it was already gone. And, despite how disoriented she was, Katie’s jaw felt intact. She ran her hand back through her hair and then rubbed her eyes. She strained to focus on the room around her and instantly everything became clear. Crystal clear. It was as though every single item in her line of vision had come into focus at one time, and she could see the details of the orange stove with the crack in the glass as well as the tiny fibers of the washcloth that lay atop the sink full of dirty dishes.

Katie closed her eyes and twisted her head, rubbing the back of her neck. The vertebrae in her neck popped and slipped, and the muscles gave up their tension. She felt pretty normal, actually—more normal than she’d felt in a long time. When Katie stretched her arms to work out the kinks in her shoulders, she realized something was amiss. Shuffling on her chest brought her eyes downward where the remnants of her Kevlar vest clung to her equally destroyed (and very professional at one time) dress shirt beneath. Under that, gray fabric. Or she thought it was. Strange because she hadn’t put on anything under her clothes except a very sensible red bra that wouldn’t show through the white cotton pressed shirt. She bit her lip softly and winced, then forced her mouth back open. A five-second examination with her fingers revealed that her incisors had somehow grown and seemed to be angled outward. Possibly she’d been injured and just hadn’t realized how badly yet.

Katie closed her mouth and continued to examine her clothing. She picked away at the vest and then the shirt beneath to reveal what she’d originally thought to be fabric, only it wasn’t fabric. When she ran her hand down the center of her sternum, she felt the pressure all the way down. She recalled running toward the door to the trailer—probably the one she was in from the look of the tiny kitchen. Then, she remembered being slimed, and then…fighting Neko and Viv. And the man with the gun…Greg. Why would she do that? She turned her head toward where she’d though the fight had happened. There on the couch, near the lizard-woman, lay Greg. He was unconscious or something, from the looks of him not moving.

“Greg?” she tried to say. It took her two tries to get the word out, and when she did finally get his name across her lips, the sound of her voice had a deep tenor to it, like it dripped with venom.
